Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck near the "Adam's Apple" or thyroid cartilage. The hormones that this gland produces help to control the body's metabolism (energy production). The brain sends messenger hormones to the thyroid to tell it how to function. The nerves of the spine also control the blood supply to the thyroid.

Most problems with the thyroid are thought to be caused by the body's own defense system attacking the gland. Injuries that affect the spine and nerve function, however, have also been shown to affect the function of the thyroid. One study examined whiplash patients and found that many suffered from poor thyroid function after injury. Correcting spinal injuries may influence thyroid function, but no research has been done in humans to investigate this relationship. Many chiropractic patients, however, report improvements in thyroid function.

Certain tests such as blood-lab work and taking the body temperature in the axilla (armpit), help reveal problems with the thyroid. Many people show symptoms of thyroid problems (loss of energy, weight gain, repeated infections, etc.) even though the results of blood work seem normal.

A complete exam and history is needed to determine if one is having thyroid problems. Ask your chiropractor for more information.
