Allergies

Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from allergies.  Seasonal allergies often flare up in the spring after the rain when flowers, trees and plants such as grass, release pollen into the air we breathe.

An allergy is sensitivity to a normally harmless substance.  The cause of allergic reactions is based in the immune system.  Normally, when you are exposed to pollen and other substances, the body's immune system simply eliminates the substance.  However, with allergies, the body over reacts to the invading irritant.  Antigens on the pollen of plants activate antibodies on white blood cells to release histamines.  But with allergies, the body produces much more than is necessary.  This excess histamine then binds with other cells to produce the symptoms of allergies such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a stuffy nose.  Also, when the body's immune system is weakened, such as after a cold or illness, the reaction is worse.  Some people also develop asthma, which is a much more serious condition.

So, what can you do?  The most important thing is to make sure you are doing everything you can to help your immune system.  Regular chiropractic adjustments improve the function of your nervous system, which is the prime controller of your immune system.  In fact, many of our long-term patient s report a great improvement with their allergies. Research has shown that subluxations (misaligned vertebrae) cause neurological stress which can impair immune system response, and can be a factor in aging.

Other things that are helpful are to drink lemon juice.  I usually put it in a glass of water.  Lemon is a wonderful antihistamine.  Echinacea and Golden Seal are natural herbs that improve immune function.  Local bee pollen is also good.  Avoid things that are mucous producing, such as dairy products, sodas and wine.  Try to avoid other irritants such as; dust, insect sprays, tobacco smoke, air pollution and fresh tar or paint.  Remaining indoors on bad days is also helpful.  You can also wear a face mask if you must go outside.  The use of air conditioners and filters has also shown to be effective.  I hope this is helpful to you.

Yours in health,
