“Once you start, you’ll have to go for the rest of your life”

Last week, I was speaking to a group of people when one rather loud gentleman blurted out “I’ve heard that once you start going to a chiropractor, you’ll have to go for the rest of your life.” I simply replied, “Yes, that’s absolutely right, and let me tell you why.” Chiropractic care is like “orthodontics” for the spine. Clinically, repeated chiropractic adjustments “train” the vertebrae to maintain their proper alignment and movement. Like the time required for braces to achieve correction depends on an individual’s teeth and mouth structure, the time required for proper positioning to occur depends on the condition of the patient’s spine, their job, and other lifestyle activities.

In our society, we typically judge our health on how we feel. If we don’t have symptoms, we think everything is fine. Pain is always the last thing to show up and the first to go away, so if we judge your need for care on how you feel, we sell you short. Most patients will go through a six month period of frequent care and most choose wellness or maintenance care afterwards. Here are some of the benefits that our patients report: more energy, better overall health, better flexibility, improved athletic performance, more comfort, able to enjoy favorite activities, and many more. One said, “Regularity in having adjustments is very important to maintain what has been achieved and to move on to what may yet be available.” Most of our wellness members think of their chiropractic care like other good health habits, such as brushing and flossing your teeth, exercise, diet, drinking water, etc. Whether a patient chooses wellness care or not, it’s always up to them.

Think of your spinal adjustments like maintaining your car. It’s recommended that you change your car’s oil every 3,000 or so miles. For how long you ask? For as long as you own the car! While some people drive 3,000 miles in a week, others do so in a month or two. The point is, however, that we change our oil on a regular basis. The same goes for caring for your spine. Whether to get adjusted weekly or monthly depends on each patient’s specific health condition. Remember, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” Don’t let your car’s engine fall out before changing its oil! You can always get another car, but if you wear your spine out, you can’t get a new one.

Yours in health,

Lynne Sullivan D.C.
