Spinal
Hygiene and its Impact on
Health and General Well Being
In a society where obesity, sedentary living and the reliance on
drugs to mask symptoms are pandemic, chiropractic remains the worlds
best kept health secret.
People
know that they should brush and floss their teeth, drink plenty
of water, exercise, eat well and get a good nights sleep,
but they dont know the importance of taking care of their
spine and nervous system. Your nervous system controls every cell,
tissue and organ in your body. If it is not functioning properly,
you wont experience the truly good health you desire. I always
tell my patients that if your spine was on your face, youd
take good care of it. We brush our teeth so they will be pretty
and white, we put braces on our teeth so theyll be nice and
straight. Even if you totally neglected your teeth, you can always
get dentures. But, what happens when you wear out your spine? You
cant get a new one. I feel its very important to take
care of your spine throughout your life so you can enjoy it to its
fullest.
In
the August issue of JVSR (Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research)
2004, there was an interesting research paper on the value of spinal
hygiene and its impact on health and general well being. Quality
of life measurements were conducted pre and post participation on
an experimental group of students taking a spinal hygiene class.
Experimental group scores were compared to a nonrandomized, but
matched control group of students.
Students
in the spinal hygiene group improved significantly across a broad
spectrum of quality of life parameters, both on the basis of pre
and post class score comparison and comparison to the control group
performance. Their conclusion was that the practice of spinal hygiene
procedures shows great promise in the vital area of improvement
of quality of life. Their hope was that health care practitioners
would share and model positive spinal and neurological health behaviors
to their patients and communities. Its nice that science is
proving what our wellness patients already know. They just feel
better; have more energy, and better health under regular chiropractic
care.

in health,
