A Sixth Sense
A recent review article published in the Journal of Internal Medicine discusses the two way communication between the nervous and immune systems. They have taken a giant step further by suggesting that the immune system may be regarded as the sixth sense.
This sixth sense allows us to be aware not only of the universe of things we can see, hear, taste, touch and smell but also the things that we cannot. These would include bacteria, viruses, antigens, tumor cells and other things that are too small to see or touch, make no noise, have not taste or odor. This allows the nervous system to receive information and take actions that are helpful to the body and detrimental to the infectious agent, all without us even being aware that our body is doing this.
What was previously viewed as outside the realm of sensory perception, and therefore metaphysical, is now seen as otherwise. As our understanding of biological processes unfolds, we see the direct link between the mind and body.
Research has also shown that people who enjoy long term chiropractic care have twice the immune system function as a normal person and four times that of a sick person. We did a survey on our wellness club members and they averaged getting sick only 1.5 times per year, where the national average is 5-7 times.
Science is now showing why people with healthy nervous systems also have healthy immune systems and enjoy better health.
