Backpack Safety Checklist
Late August and early September marks the annual march back to school by hundreds of thousands of children. Laden with an ever-increasing number and size of textbooks, our children are risking serious, lifelong back trouble from improperly packed or worn backpacks. Here is a safety checklist:
- Choose a backpack that is sturdy and correctly sized
- Purchase a backpack with padded shoulder straps
- The total weight of the loaded backpack should not exceed 15% of the child’s weight
- Pack heavier items closet to the back
- Use both shoulder straps at all times
- Tighten shoulder straps until snug, but not tight
- For heavier loads, use a stabilizing waist strap
Most importantly, keep your spine healthy with regular chiropractic check-ups.
Yours in health,
