Attention Parents

Have you ever wondered why you see so many children in our office? How do children benefit from chiropractic care, they must not have neck or back pain?

Family care should actually start from the beginning. Pregnant moms can greatly benefit from care. During this period of weight gain and hormonal changes, many mothers receive chiropractic care. They often report feeling better and have easier births. Personally, I was adjusted all throughout my pregnancy and worked up until the day that I delivered my son, Brad.

Newborn, infants and children can benefit as well. The birth process may be the cause of the first subluxation! Then, learning to walk, ride a bike or play sports can produce so-called “growing pains.” Ignored, these problems may worsen until they can become more difficult to correct as an adult. Even today’s “natural” childbirth methods can affect an infant’s spine. Preliminary studies suggest that colic, unusual crying; poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits can be signs of spinal distress. Relax. Newborn adjustments are gentle. As a rule, no more pressure that you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato is involved.

We believe that it is important to have your spine and nervous system checked as you grow, just like taking good care of your teeth. I always tell patients that you can always get false teeth, but you can’t get a new spine, so take care of it. Research has shown that children who grow up under chiropractic care have far less colds, flu, asthma, allergies and are generally healthier. My son, Brad, has only missed a few days of school due to illness in 17 years!

Also, it is important to check children’s spines for signs of scoliosis. This is a lateral or side ways curvature of the spine and plagues an estimated 4 to 5 million Americans. As a quick check, when looking at your child from the back, their head should be straight (not titled), their shoulders should be level, their spine should be in a straight line, and their hips should be level. Our web site has more information about this condition, or simply gives us a call. Early diagnosis and care is important for children with scoliosis. An untreated spinal curvature may advance quickly, especially during the period of rapid teenage growth.

During the month of September our office is promoting back to school with courtesy spinal check-ups and scoliosis screening for kids. Please give us a call for an appointment.

Yours in health,
